About this recipe
Thai basil stir-fries live or die by the basil—and the texture of tofu. Here, pressing your tofu properly before cubing means it'll crisp at the edges in seconds, catching that charred-sweet basil fragrance without turning rubbery. The magic is in using coconut aminos instead of soy (lower sodium, keto-friendly) and a whisper of monk fruit to mimic palm sugar's round sweetness without spiking blood sugar. A common mistake is overcrowding the pan, which steams everything; work in batches if needed. The dish comes together faster than delivery orders—20 minutes from cutting board to plate.
If thai basil isn't available, holy basil or even regular basil works, though the anise note won't be as pronounced. Make it ahead by cooking everything except the basil; fold the fresh herb in just before serving so it stays vibrant. Sesame oil is non-negotiable here; it's the signature whisper under the chili heat.
This is the kind of dinner that tastes like you spent an hour at the stove but genuinely doesn't. Serve over cauliflower rice to catch every drop of the pan sauce, or with a sharp cucumber salad to cut the richness of the sesame oil. The tofu takes on whatever you pair it with, making this endlessly adaptable to what's in your crisper.

Method
- 1Press tofu between towels for 15 min to remove excess moisture, then cube into 1-inch pieces.
- 2Heat 1 tbsp coconut oil in a wok or large pan over high heat. Add tofu cubes and cook 4–5 min until edges brown. Set aside.
- 3In the same pan, add remaining coconut oil, sliced garlic, and thai chilies. Stir-fry 30 seconds until fragrant.
- 4Add mushrooms and bell peppers, stir-fry 3–4 min until tender-crisp.
- 5Return tofu to the pan. Add coconut aminos, sesame oil, monk fruit sweetener, and salt. Toss for 1 min.
- 6Off heat, fold in fresh thai basil. Taste and adjust seasoning.
- 7Serve immediately with cauliflower rice or cucumber salad on the side.
